History

It was originally developed by Varien Inc a company based in Palo Alto, California. Varien published the first actual general stable release of the software on March 31, 2008.

Roy Rubin, a former CEO of Varien, later sold a substantial share of the company to eBay the known website company, which eventually completely acquired and sold the company to Permira, Then Permira later sold magento  to Adobe.
